Fritz Herder Rites Mark the Passing of Prominent Yoakumite
On August 12, 1885, Fritz Herder was born on a farm near the present site of Yoakum. Often remarking that he grew up with the town, he recalled attending Morris School near Yoakum and later the Nash Academy in Cuero.
On October 25, 1905 he was married to Dora Pettit who was also residing near Yoakum. This young couple made their home on a farm that was part of the original Herder tract of land.
Mr. and Mrs. Herder spent all except one year of their married life on the same farm and all five of their children were born and reared there.
Besides farming, Mr. Herder was active in many other fields of work. He served as a director of the Farmers and Merchants State Bank, was Presiding Judge of West Yoakum Precinct for 46 years, and served as tax assessor for the YISD for many years.
His life and dealings with his fellowmen were indicative of his Christian training and faith. He served his church in various capacities being a trustee and steward of the First Methodist Church for practically all of the years of his membership there.
In later years Mr. Herder diverted much of his farming time to livestock raising. He was very active with his work until his sudden death June 24th. He was buried June 26 with services at the First Methodist Church.
The Reverends Wayne G. Smith of Yoakum and William Mathis Dunn of Luling officiated.
Active pallbearers were: Owen Hagen, Emil Quast, Harry Thiele, Victor Spies, Gerhard Petering and C.S. Shaw.
Survivors are his wife, Dora; his three daughters, Hazel Becker, Galena Park; Gertrude Shafer, San Antonio; Ruth Staehr, Oklahoma City; and his two sons, Ralph, Yoakum; and Elliott, San Antonio.
