Karl J. Birk, 76, born Feb. 27, 1931, in Belleville, Ill., passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007, at his home in Swansea, Ill., surrounded by his loving family. He died peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Birk retired as a payroll clerk after 37 years at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Parish, Belleville, Ill., where he served as a lector, was a former member of the choir, and volunteered for many years helping students at St. Mary's School.
He was also a member of the Metro East Community Chorale. Karl was a peaceful man who lived at peace with the world around him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Franz A. and Catherine A., nee Mueth, Birk.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carol J., nee Schuetz, Birk, whom he married Oct. 6, 1959; four sons and a daughter, Steven J. (Mary) Birk of Belleville, Ill., David A. (fiancee, Joyce) Birk and Jeffrey M. (Natalie) Birk, both of Swansea, Ill., Gregory P. (Lauren) Birk of Staunton, Ill., and Dianne C. Birk of Swansea, Ill.; 13 grandchildren, Stephanie, Matthew, Ashley, Sara, Kristen, Hannah, Vincent, Lucas, Adam, Courtney, Marc, Danielle, and Noah Birk; a brother, Paul F. Birk of Flora, Ill.; a dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Joyce Friederich of Belleville, Ill.; nieces, nephews; and many dear friends.
Funeral: Funeral procession will leave at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, from George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill., for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., with the Rev. John Myler officiating. Burial will be at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, Ill.
