Born Andreas Bernard Carl Schmidt on March 11, 1861, to Phillip and Kunigunda (Carl) Schmidt of Sterbfritz, Germany. Andrew came to the U.S. with his parents and an infant sister Barbara in 1869. Andrew's mother and sister died in Illinois in 1871.His father soon remarried and in 1875 the family moved to Floyd County, Iowa. It was there that Andrew met and married Wilhelmina "Minnie" Duesenberg. They had six children: William (b., d. 1886), Ruth (b., d. 1888), Edna (1889-1940), Ella (1892-1955), Bertha (1894-1981), and Durwood (b., d. 1896).

Andrew died on November 8, 1929, in Mason City, Iowa.
