Doris Foster was born at Dougherty, Texas on August 8, 1934, the daughter of Earl and Mabel (Bradford) Foster. She attended school at Dougherty through the eighth grade, and attended high school at Floydada, Texas, graduating in 1951. After high school she was employed, along with her two sisters, by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as operators. This was back when the operator would ask, "Number please" and then manually connect you with your party.
After automatic dialing eliminated their jobs, she then worked in Floydada for the county ASCS office, a branch of the USDA.
On December 19, 1959, she was married to Lawrence Burke, a former classmate, and moved to Plainview, Texas, where Lawrence was employed by the Santa Fe Ry. She continued living in Plainview where both her children were born, and worked for the Hale County State Bank, until moving to Wasta, South Dakota, in 1968 where they farmed at Elm Springs. The following year they moved onto a small ranch at Elm Springs, living there until her death.
She is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, Lawrence Burke of Elm Springs; a daughter Melissa Burke of Rapid City; a son Shannon Burke and his wife Terah of Grantsville, Utah; a grandson Skyler Burke of Ft. Lewis, Washington; a granddaughter Shawnee Burke of Rapid City; and her twin sister Dorothy Patterson of Portage, Michigan.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents and an older sister Francis Wilson.
Visitation was held 4-7 p.m. on Monday, December 7, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall, and two hours preceding the services on Tuesday.
Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 8, at the Elm Springs Community Hall, with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating.
Interment was at the Elm Springs Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established equally for the Elm Springs Church, the Elm Springs Community Hall, and the Elm Springs Fire Department.
