Harry J. Baars, 81, of Lusk died Oct. 18, 1996, at Niobrara County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 21, 1996, at Bader Funeral Home with the Rev. Bret Schroeder of St. Paul's Lutheran Church officiating. Memorials are to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the Niobrara Senior Center.
He was born May 1, 1915, to Fred and Dorthea (Nobbman) Baars at the Baars ranch southeast of Lusk. He attended grade school at Node and attended high school in Lusk. He spent his life raising cattle on the family ranch.
He married Charlotte Canfield on June 1, 1952. They had three daughters and a son. His wife preceded him in death in 1980. He married Bessie Trohkimoinen May 9, 1989.
He was a member of St Paul's Lutheran Church and the Niobrara Senior Citizens.
He enjoyed bowling and participated in couples' and men's' leagues for many years.
He was active in 4-H, serving as a leader for several years and was a great supporter of his children's activities.
He enjoyed watching football, playing pinochle, and attending community concerts and functions. He was well known for raising some of the finest Herford cattle in Niobrara County and for his kindness and always taking care of his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Charlotte; an infant daughter; two sisters; and a brother.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie of Lusk, children Lorraine Vocu and Jim Goehring of Riverton, Karen and Jim Krotz of Hay Springs, Neb., Robyn and Tom Parker of Keystone, S.D., and Kevin and Denise Baars of Lusk; step-children Hazel and Wilbur Knaub and Don and Bobbie Trohkimoinen, all of Vale, S.D. and seven grandchildren.
