Funeral Services Held at 2 O'Clock This Afternoon
John Allen, 77 years of age, a retired farmer living at Raglesville, in VanBuren township, died Saturday night at 10:30 o'clock after a brief illness, of paralysis. Thursday of last week, Mr. Allen went to the barn lot and was chopping some wood. When darkness came he failed to return to the house, and members of the family became worried and went in search of him. He was found lying near the woodpile seriously stricken with paralysis. He had been lying there about three hours before being found. Remaining in a critical condition from that time, he died late Saturday night as a result of the stroke. Mr. Allen was born on May 2, 1857, being a son of Mr. And Mrs. Jerry Allen. His mother's maiden name was Goodman. He was a farmer all his life, and was widely known in VanBuren township. For some time the family had lived next door to the Methodist church at Raglesville. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Raglesville Methodist church, with Rev. Beas Frady and Rev. McBride in charge, and burial following in Raglesville cemetery. Huette Poindexter and Sons had charge of the funeral.
Surviving is the widow, Esther Staggers Allen, to whom he was married on January 30, 1930. His first wife, Martha Perkins, whom he was married September 10, 1882, preceded him in death several years ago. Surviving children are Bryan Allen of Washington, Sarah Chestnut of VanBuren township, Jesse Allen of Medford, Ore., Frank Allen of Newman Ill, and John W. Allen of Oaktown. Two sons and one daughter are dead. One sister, Mrs. Malinda McCoy of Washington, and one brother, Elijah Allen, of Fowler, Kan., are also survivors.
