Daughter of William Titus and Caroline (Briggs) Curtis, Ida was raised with her two brothers in a home built in 1852 by her grandfather, Titus Curtiss. Ida played the piano and enjoyed the benefits of education and refinement because of her father's Merino sheep farming and brokerage business. She married a cousin, Francis Eugene Butler, on Feb 11, 1880 in Perry, Wyoming Co, New York. Ida and Frank had two children and by 1889 they traveled to Denver, where Frank made some unsuccessful Silver Mine venture capital speculations and Ida gave birth to their third child. By 1894, they joined Ida's elderly father in Los Angeles. Pictures of the interior indicate the home was of the Victorian era. They moved to Portland, Oregon around 1906 and started their search for suitable farm land to buy. They moved to Clatsop Co, Oregon about 1908, where the family rented housing in Knappa and Svensen, and finally bought land in Brownsmead, where they built their own home and lived out the rest of their days, farming the land, and being very active in the civic and social activities of the area in Brownsmead, also known as "Blind Slough".

Through much of her life, Ida kept daily diaries which chronicled the family life. She also remained in constant communication with distant family members with her prolific letter-writing. Not only was she a skilled homemaker who made a comfortable home for her family, Ida continued her piano-playing and gave piano lessons to neighborhood children. Ida brought her Haviland China from New York, and the set survives her today. She had three children: Herbert, Elma, and Dorothy.
