Bruning Banner dated 2-7-1924:
With the passing of Fred Middendorf, Sr., this community loses one of the very first pioneers of this vicinity who came from Illinois forty-one years ago.
In 1883, together with his family and others, he landed in Belvidere and hauled his belongings overland to the farm adjoining Bruning, and since that time has been instrumental in the welfare of this community.
Bruning or railroads were unknown at this time and Mr. Middendorf lived to see our village and surroundings develop to its present day state.
Fredrich Wilhelm Middendorf was born June 18, 1836, at Rechtern, near Barnstorf, Province of Hanover, Germany. In early infancy he was baptized in the name of the triune God, and after due instruction was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
He entered the estate of marriage with Elise Philippi April 13, 1866, at Dunstort, near Barnstorf, and made his home there until 1878, when the family emigrated to America and lived near El Paso, Ill., until January, 1883, when they came to Nebraska and made their home near Bruning.
The deceased was loved and esteemed by a wide circle of friends. He was one of the charter members and also one of the first deacons of Trinity Lutheran Church. For many years he served as a trustee of the congregation. At different times he was a delegate to the meetings of the district and joint synod. He was one of the founders of Hebron academy and served this institution as a member of the first board of trustees.
On account of his advancing age he resigned all these positions, but remained ever faithful to his church and at all times had a loving heart and an open hand for the work of missions and Christian education and benevolence.
He was permitted, together with his life's companion, to celebrate his golden wedding anniversary in 1916. He was blessed by God in many respects, especially so with health and strength of body. As a faithful humble Christian he gave all praise and glory to God. When, during the last years he could, on account of infirmities of his wife, no more attend services at the house of God he faithfully used God's Word and Sacrament at home.
The first of July, 1923, his faithful wife preceded him in death. And since that time he has sought comfort in the thought that soon he would join her in the presence of the Savior. He was able again only recently to attend church services and was with the congregation only a few Sundays before Christmas and received communion.
About two weeks ago he was taken sick. He was soon convinced that the Lord would call him to his Heavenly Kingdom and prepared by faithful prayer and holy communion for the end. Very peacefully he departed this life February 1.
He had reached the advanced age of87 years, 7 months and 13 days.
He is survived and mourned by three sons, W. F. , Henry and Fred, and two daughters, Mrs. G. W. Philippi and Mrs. John Wilhelms. One daughter preceded him and her mother in death; dying in infancy. A brother, Diedrich also survives and resides in Germany. Twenty four grandchildren and twenty four great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held at Trinity church with burial made in the parish cemetery beside his wife.
