Bruning Banner dated 7-5-1923:
Elise Margaretha Charlotte Middendorf, nee Philippi, was born September 27, 1838, at Gross Winkelm, Oldenburg, Germany. She was baptized in infancy and after Christian instruction, was confirmed as a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
April 13, 1866, she entered the estate of marriage with Friedrich(sic) Wilhelm Middendorf and made her home at Dunstorf, Province of Hanover, Germany. This union was blessed by God with six children, two of whom preceded her into eternity in early infancy.
During May, 1878, the deceased with her family, came to El Paso, Ill., and in the month of January, 1883, they moved to Bruning, which was then a part of the Nebraska prairie, where she has lived for more than forty years on the home farm at the edge of town.
The deceased, with her husband, are numbered among the charter members of Trinity congregation and was at all time, until she was prevented by infirmities incident to old age, very faithful in the attendance at all services in the House of God. While confined to her home this Christian woman was comforted by the Grace, Word and Sacrament of her Maker.
Seven years ago she and her husband were permitted to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with their many relatives and friends in this vicinity.
The deceased had suffered her share of sickness and infirmities, but was able to do her housework until about two weeks ago, when she was taken seriously ill. Soon she realized that the end was at hand and prayed that God might take her to His Heavenly home. Her prayer was granted and on Sunday morning she entered into the rest of the redeemed children of God.
She had reached the age of 84 years, 9 months and 4 days. She is survived and mourned b her life-mate, three sons, one daughter, one step-daughter, three brothers, twenty-four grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and numerous friends and relatives.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the home farm and at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial was made in the church cemetery and thus the long and eventful career of one of Bruning's pioneers is closed, but memories of such lives will remain long with friends and relatives.
