After their marriage they lived on the Siemen Farm in Woodbine with his parents, William Sr. and Catherine Bergman Siemen, and his two unmarried siblings, Herman "Shaum" Siemen and Mathilda "Tillie" Siemen. After Grandma Siemen died in 1933, Shaum and Tillie remained in the Small House, but the house also housed the hired help on the farm. Berniece and Tillie were often asked to help with the farm helpers' children and often cared for them when they were sick.
