After his parents died (William in 1919 and Catherine in 1933) he and his brother Herman farmed the family farm in Woodbine until they sold the farm in 1944. They then moved to a farm in Hanover, IL where he and Herman continued their partnership with his son, Roland. Roland operated the Hanover farm after August passed away in 1951, and Herman remained living on the farm with Roland and his family and his sister-in-law Berniece as his caretaker.
