After Delmar married Rita Lewis (b. 1923) on 1 June 1947 his father decided to retire and gave him the operation of the Dittmar Family farm, which had been founded in 1854 when Delmar's great-grandfather, Erhardt Dittmar I, brought his family over from Bavaria to settle in Jo Daviess County. Delmar thus became the fourth generation of Dittmars to own and operate the Dittmar family homestead.
