John graduated from Olean High School, Cattaraugus County NY in 1962. Voted best looking male. Played Varsity Football for 3 years. Enjoyed Skiing, Hunting and Sailing. John was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church and was active in Boy Scouts of America. Graduated with honors in 1966 from Norwich University, in Northfield, Vermont majoring in business Adminstration, and he was a member of the ROTC there. He was called up to active duty in 1966, then volunteered for duty in Vietnam. He was an advisor for the South Vietnamese 48th Regional Battalion. Awarded the Bronse Star, and South Vietnamese National Order of Vietnam, Fifth Class.
