VeteranW. R. 'BILL' CAYLER DIES TUESDAY MORNING AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A CAR ON MAIN STREET

Death struck suddenly on Perryton's Main street Tuesday morning, taking one of the city's most popular business men and sportsmen W. R. "Bill" CAYLER, who died some three hours after being struck by an automobile in front of the First National Bank.

The accident occurred about 7:20 a. m., as Bill was crossing the street, en route to a barber shop for his regular morning shave. He was half way across the street when he was hit by a car driven by L. C. Case, Ochiltree County employee, who was on his way to work.

The brakes on the Case automobile were defective, according to reports of investigating officers, and the overcast sky made the visibility somewhat reduced. Case was driving with his lights on.

It was reported that Bill started across the street, saw the car approaching, dodged back, then dodged forward again, being struck by the car which had been turned in an attempt to avoid hitting him. He was thrown across the hood of the car and then to the pavement. The car traveled about 12 or 15 feet from the point of impact.

The cause of death was fractured skull, and he also suffered a badly broken leg where the bumper struck him. He was rushed to the Perryton hospital a few minutes after the accident occurred, but lived only three hours. Death came approximately 10:30 o'clock Tuesday morning.

He had lived in Perryton for the past 25 years and was very active in the civic life of the community. He was owner and operator of the Perryton Cleaners and owned the Cayler Laundry, which he opened a few months ago. He was a member of the American Legion and was a Mason.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mattie Maude CAYLER; a daughter, Kay; his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. CAYLER, Perryton; a brother, Harry CAYLER, Hereford; and four sisters, Mrs. John OSTERBUHR, Franklin, Nebraska, Mrs. William MOORE, Durango, Colorado, Mrs. Helen THURSTON, Liberal, Kansas, and Mrs. Edna MUIR, Sacramento, California.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday afternoon, December 04. at the Methodist Church with Rev. Jim H. Sharp. Masonic Services will be conducted at the graveside.
