FALL IN SHAFT FATAL TO CLERK

New Haven Man Dies in Hospital Here

Charles Werling, 59, who fell down an elevator shaft in the Stucky Brothers hardware store in New Haven Monday, died of his injuries at 9:15 o’clock last night at the Lutheran Hospital. Death was caused by a fracture on the right side of his skull and nine fractured ribs on the right side of the chest, reported Dr. C. B. Parker, deputy Allen County coroner, after an investigation. Dr. Parker indicated that a verdict of accidental death will be recommended in the case.

Werling, employed by the hardware company, stepped backward into the empty elevator shaft from the first floor of a new building and toppled seven feet to the basement. He was carrying two galvanized iron feeding troughs, one under each arm, when the accident occurred. It was the second time Werling had fallen down the shaft. On the previous occasion, his clothing caught on a projection in the shaft and saved him from injury. The body was taken to the Harper and Son funeral home in New Haven.

Werling is survived by the widow, Mrs. Mary Werling; the following children, Mrs. Minnie Bosselman of New Haven, Mrs. Harry Deiter, Mrs. Walter Schmidt and Arnold Werling, all of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Cecil Dull of Decatur, George Werling of New Haven and Herbert, Dorothy and Lorene at home; four grandchildren; two brothers, Fred Werling and August Werling, a twin brother, both of this city; and a sister, Mrs. Susie Bruick of Hoagland.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the home in New Haven and at 2:30p.m. at the Emanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. H. L. Wiese officiating. Burial will be in the New Haven Lutheran
