David Dehner
David Luke Dehner, 83, of Burlington died at 6:50 p.m. Friday, April 2, 2010, at Great River Medical Center Klein Center in Burlington.

Born April 17, 1926, in Burlington, he was the son of Carl A. and Edna R. Reid Dehner.

Mr. Dehner worked at Leopolds, was an upholsterer with C & E for 13 years, and at IRC -TRW for 23 years. He was past president of Local 2303 Machinist Union and served as financial secretary for Local 1806. He was in the 7th Fleet in the U.S. Navy for 2 1/2 years during World War II aboard the USS Medusa in the Southeast Pacific and the Philippines. He was a member of American Legion Post 52. He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 10102 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He was a lifetime member and Elder Emeritus of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, where he was chairman of the board, a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, deacon and trustee. He also was a member of RSVP, Senior Center Board, the local and national AARP, and was a volunteer for the Salvation Army and Neighborhood Center.

He was a past winner of the Governor's Volunteer Award with more than 4,000 hours of community service. He also was a recipient of the Des Moines County Conservation Foundation Recognition Award.

He was the co-organizer of Hunger Walk and Sweet Corn Project, which raised $125,000 for CROP. He was invited to and presented the Humanitarian Award at the 50th Anniversary of Church World Services. He helped start the Medical Shuttle to Iowa City for Community Action. He was an advocate for nursing home residents through Area Agency on Aging and was a peer counselor certifier for the elderly. He participated in and was a volunteer for Senior Olympics for four counties. He was one of 500 participants selected to carry the Olympic Torch for the 1996 Olympics. He participated in the Blind Veterans Golf Tournament and was a five-year associate member. He also participated in the Disabled Veterans Winter Games and was a four-year associate member there. Survivors include two brothers, Ralph Dehner of Burlington and Ernest Dehner of East Moline, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and a sister.

Visitation with family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Prugh's Chapel.

The funeral service with military rites for Mr. Dehner will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ with the Rev. Tom Smith officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

A memorial has been established for the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ Youth Group.
