TRAVERSE CITY - Alice Schardt, 83, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Jan. 14, 1916, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Rudolph and Antonia (Cerny) Blazek. On Jan. 4, 1936, in Traverse City, she married Gerald Schardt, who preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1977.
Alice was employed at Traverse City West Junior High School as support staff for 10 years, retiring in 1980. She was an 8th grade graduate of the original one room Sabin school. Alice was a member of College Terrace Wesleyan and the Boardman Valley Ladies Group. She was a former member of Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Alice enjoyed flower gardening and had worked with Wyatt Gardens.
She is survived by seven children, Doris Jennette of Traverse City, Ila (Merle) McDiarmid of Irons, Gerald (Sydney) Schardt, Jr. of Sunbury, Ohio, Barbara (Arthur) Vredenburg of Jenison, Richard Schardt of Roswell, NM, Buddy (Catherine) Schardt of Traverse City and Antonia "Toni" (Ronald) Aeschliman of Traverse City; one brother, Rudolph (Norma) Blazek of Squim, Wash.; two sisters, Bessie (Joe) Meyer and Jennie Getchel - both of Traverse City; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Blazek, during World War II; a sister, Rose Bohrer; and a grandson, Duane Jennette.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Deacon Alice Christopher officiating and assisted by Alice Schardt's grandson, Deacon Gregory Barber. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
