Local Matters

Fatal Railroad Accident - As the express train from Harrisburg to this city upon the Northern Central Railway was on it's downward trip on Saturday morning last, it ran over and caused the instantaneous death of an aged lady, named Rebecca Foreman, a resident of this city. The particulars of this deplorable affair were detailed to us as follows: As the train was running a short curve in the neighborhood of Freeland, some thirty-three miles from this city, the engineer discovered the lady about one hundred yards ahead, walking upon the track, when he immediately whistled down the brakes upon the train and reversed his engine, but all to no purpose, as she was caught up by the cow catcher and so mangled as to cause immediate death. The body was taken in charge by the officers of the train and conveyed to Parkton Station, to which place C.C. Adreon, Esq., the superintendent of the road, repaired as soon as the affair was known here, with a view to having a inquest held over the remains and taking charge of the same.

The inquest was held by James Turner, Esq., of the county, and the jury rendered the following verdict, after a careful investigation of the sad affair, having all those connected with the train before them and examined:

"That Rebecca Foreman came to her death by an injury received from the cars of the Northern Central railway, near the thirty-three mile post. They also believe from the best evidence that she was deaf and dumb and supposed to be about 60 years of age; and the jury believe her death to have been purely accidental, and no blame whatever can be attached to anyone connected with the train, everything being done that could be to arrest it." The body was then brought to the city and delivered in charge of her friends for burial. The deceased resided in Eutaw Street near Franklin.

Rebecca is buried next to Joshua D. Foreman on the other side of him from his wife. Based soley on birthdates, there is the possibility that this could be his sister, but there is no proof.

She was buried on December 10.
