Rachel Melchior, 92, of Sterling, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2001 in Sterling.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with Rev. Spencer Green officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.

Mrs. Melchior was born June 23, 1909 to John and Marie Barbara (Heimbechner) Heimbegner in Sedgwick.

On April 10, 1928 she married John Melchior in Holyoke.

After farming several years in the Sedgwick County area, they moved to Las Animas, where they farmed for 30 years. They moved to Sterling upon retirement in 1977. She was of the Lutheran faith.

Mrs. Melchior is survived by one sister, Pauline Winger of Bremerton, Wash.; three granddaughters, Linda Gallegos and husband Mike of Del Norte, Kathleen Kiefer and husband Scott of Lincoln, Neb., and Janet Bodaness and husband Spencer of Sterling; one special niece, Isabel VanNorman of Sterling; one special nephew, Kenneth Heimbegner of Sterling; 10 great-grandchildren, Amy, Christy, Lori, Mika and Samantha Gallegos, Kimberly and Megan Kiefer, Joe and Branden Bodaness, and MistiKae Reeves and husband Tony; one great-great-grandchild, Tyus Gallegos.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Melchior; two sons, John and Edward Melchior; and eight brothers and sisters.
