CENTERVILLE — Rita Rein Hey, 97, of Centerville, lieutenant commander, retired, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 2, 2010.She was the wife of the late Richard Hey Jr., a decorated U.S. Marine pilot, and sister of the late Robert F. Rein.Born in Milton, daughter of the late Frank and Katherine Rein, Rita proudly graduated from Massachusetts General Hospital School for Nurses and Baylor University in Texas, becoming one of the first female anesthesiologists.Enlisting in the Navy Nurses Corps, Rita traveled the world. As chief anesthesiologist, she was stationed throughout her career at naval stations in North Africa, England, Germany, Central America and the Caribbean.During the Korean conflict, Rita was one of two nurses in the original MASH #8063 unit. Along with 19 other nurses, Rita was known in the Navy Nurse Corps as the "Sacred Twenty." She truly loved nursing and lived her life to the fullest with laughter, fun and adventure. Her career is highlighted in the historical book, "In and Out of Harm's Way," by Capt. Doris M. Sterner, NC, USN (Ret).Upon retirement Rita and Rick resided in California, then returned to the east coast to Florida for over 30 years prior to relocating to Cape Cod in 2002.Rita leaves many family members and friends, both new and old. Survivors are nieces Nancy Kelly and her husband Thomas of Centerville, Janet Paskauskas of Worcester, Karen Rein of Abington, Mary E. Mitchell and her husband Michael of Boston, Megan Cullen and her husband Jack of Marshfield, and nephews Peter Rein and his wife Kathleen of Marshfield, and Robert F. Rein Jr. and his wife Catherine of Marshfield. Additionally, Laquita Rein, sister-in-law and family of Florida; 14 great-nieces and nephews; and 15 great-great-nieces and nephews and cousins from east and west coasts.Rita was a member of Massachusetts General Hospital Nurses' Alumnae Association, Navy Nurses Corps Association, Military Officers Association of America, and Daughters of the American Revolution.Dear Rita will be remembered for her warm smile, strength, independence, always expressing a sincere "thank you," and strong sense of pride in serving her country.A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2010, in Our Lady of Victory Church, 230 S. Main St., Centerville. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne with military honors.Donations in her memory may be made to Greyhound Pets of America, FL SE Coast Chapter, 226 SE First Ave., Boynton Beach, FL 33435; or [email protected].
