John worked in construction and never married. He was a plasterer. He developed tuberculosis. He died of it 29 days after his younger brother Bernhard was killed in the wagon accident. John was 31 years old. Their funerals were adjacent in the records at St Marys.

At that time wakes were held in the family's home. When the funeral home brought John's body to the home place, Bernhard's son Raymond was a little boy, and he was excited when he saw the coffin a few weeks after they buried his father and he said excitedly "They are bringing my Daddy back".
