Katharina Gisler Sprenger was born Oct. 4, 1810 in Volken, Canton Zurich, Switzerland. She emigrated with her husband, Hans Jakob Sprenger (born in Neftenbach, Canton Zurich, Switzerland 1826-1877), and two daughters (Maria and Anna) aboard the Ship St. Paul, arriving in New York on June 1, 1854. They made their way to LaCrosse, WI and purchased land about 2-3 miles east of LaCrosse, WI on current Highway 14-61. [This land is in the Town of Shelby and is currently owned by Susan Strehl, daughter of Robert and Evelyn Strehl. ]

Katharina and Jacob (as he was known in the United States) had three more children born in the US. They were John, Jakob and Henry. John was born dead and Jakob died at 2 weeks of age. Henry was 9 years old when his mother passed away.

On August 21, 1866, Jakob married Catherine (born Maria Catherina) Scholer, who had recently emigrated from Baden, Germany to Wabasha County, MN. Jacob and Catherine had three children: Jacob John, Christina and Emil Jacob. Anna Sprenger married Martin Fidel Sugg (Brand, Austria) and Maria (Mary) Sprenger married Wilhelm Heinrich Hermann.

Hans Jakob Sprenger died in 1877 of tuberculosis in Chester Township, Wabasha County, Minnesota. Katharina died January 3, 1866 at the age of 55 years, 2 months and 29 days in Shelby Township, LaCrosse County, Wisconsin and is buried about a mile away from her family's farm. The cemetery is located at W4607 US HWY. 14-61 LaCrosse, WI. Blessed be the memory of Katharina Gisler Sprenger.
