Mr. Hirth passed away Saturday in Humphreys Memorial Hospital at the age of 76.
He was a native of Fernandina Beach, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis G. Hirth. He was a charter member of Theodore H. Hernandez American Legion Post 54 and served as Post Commander for several years. Mr.Hirth was known as "Mr. American Legion" for his decades of service with the VFW. The war veterans' monument at the foot of Atlantic Avenue was erected largely through Hirth's efforts. The American flag located in front of the monument flew at half staff to mark Hirth's passing.
Survivors include two sisters, Miss Emma A. Hirth of Fernandina Beach, Mrs.Adeline H. Brooks of Jackson, Louisiana; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the mental Health Association, to aid the mentally retarded.
