Berthel "Bert" Melanchton (Hovland) Christiansen, Pelican Rapids, died July 31, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in Pelican Rapids.

He was born Sept. 1, 1911, in Larson, N.D., the son of Edor and Christine (Nettestad) Christianson. He grew up near Pelican Rapids and attended a country school.

On June 2, 1935, he was united in marriage to Viola Hovland in Pelican Rapids. He was employed for the city of Pelican Rapids as a police officer. He later worked for the Pelican Rapids street department until his retirement. Viola died May 10, 2002.
He enjoyed trapping, hunting and fishing. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son Elder Christianson; grandson Mark Richard Olson; great-grandson Davey Johnson; brother Clifford; and sister Edna Hole.

Visitation: Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church

Service: 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Pelican Rapids
