Katie was born to Katharina Elisabeth Schimpf and Gottfried Baker (Becker) in the Volga village of Erlenbach, Russia. She came to the United States with her parents in 1913. Her father died when Katie was eight, and her mother died two years later when Katie was 10. She married Christian Rappuhn in 1928. Their children are Ruth Marie, Alexander Christ, Judith Kay, Mary Louise and one child still living. Katie's siblings are Maria, who died on the passage to the USA, Mary, Eva and Godfred Jr.
