Johann Heinrich Hilgefort was born in Dinklage, Oldenburg, Germany to Johann Theodur (Dietrich) Hilgefort and Margaretha Elisabeth Barhorst. He emigrated with his parents and siblings in 1847 to McLean Township. He married Anna Maria Grube in 1859. They had one daughter who died at 18 months of age shortly before Anna died. He married Maria Katharina Meyer in 1863 and they had 8 children while living on Hilgefort Road. Their first son, Bernard born on November 25, 1863 died on January 3, 1868.
