Louis C. Helgoth, 79, of St. Libory, died Wednesday, July 21, 2010, surrounded by his entire family, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Louis was born on April 24, 1931, on a farm southeast of David City, the son of Charles and Catherine (Speicher) Helgoth.
He was united in marriage to Rose Marie Raskey on Oct. 9, 1954, at Brainard.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie; sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Rose Helgoth of St. Paul, Chuck and Shelly Helgoth and Todd and Tammy Helgoth, all of St. Libory; daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie and Mick Jameson of Minden and Teri and Kerry Supencheck of Grand Island; brother, Leonard Helgoth of David City; sister, Lucille Vanis of St. Libory and a host of friends and relatives.
He also leaves to cherish his memory, 13 grandchildren, Haley, Jaime and Colton Helgoth, Broderick, Dominick, Maverick and Darrick Helgoth, Lucas and Ashton Helgoth, Amber Dizmang and her husband, Jake and Samantha Rush, and Dustin and Nick Supencheck; and one great-granddaughter, Leah Dizmang.
Louis attended rural schools and was a 1948 graduate of David City High School. Upon completing his education he farmed with his father.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.
He then moved to St. Libory where he began farming in the spring of 1954.
He and Rose Marie lived their entire married life on their farm northeast of St. Libory. They raised melons and produce which they sold in David City. In 1967, they started their produce stand along Highway 281, which the family still owns and operates to this day.
He also was a seed corn dealer for many years and worked for the A.S.C.S. office in St. Paul in his younger years.
He was a longtime member of St. Libory's Catholic Church, where he was a longtime catechism teacher and lector.
He was also a former member of the St. Libory Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.
Louis was a very creative person and loved painting. He was a jokester who dearly loved all his grandchildren. For the past 14 years, he and Rose Marie enjoyed spending their winters in Rio Grande Valley in Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Cheryl Rose Helgoth; and his brother, Richard Helgoth.
