Leonard H. Beckmann, age 92, passed away on October 8, 2009 at Prairie Haven Nursing Center in Kensington, KS. He was born the son of Benjamin & Bertha (Hestermann) Beckmann in Smith County on May 14, 1917. Siblings were Edward Beckmann and Linda Beckmann (Roggow), who have preceded him in death.

Leonard attended school at the Clifford Country School. he farmed on the family farm near Athol until in Germany with the 93rd Chemical Motor Battalion during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a member of the American Legion of Kensington for the rest of his life.

Leonard married Irma Irene Musser, of Smith Center, August 1946 and to this union was born Barbara June Beckmann and Dennis (Deke) Leon Beckmann.

Leonard farmed near Athol most of his life, until turning over the daily operations to his son, Dennis (Deke) Beckmann. He resided in Kensington since.

Leonard was very active in the St. Lutheran Church, Athol all his life until retirement from farming and then he attended the St. John Lutheran Church, E.C.L.A.in Kensington. Irma passed away in December 1981. Leonard married Otta Lee Greer of Alma, NE in June 1985. Lee passed away in 2008.

The survivors include daughter, Barbara (June) Bowman-George of Phoenix, AZ and husband Gary; son Dennis (Deke) Beckmann and Tracy Stein of rural Athol, KS; grandchildren Michelle L. Simon of Gilbert, AZ, Rob Beckmann of Harrison, AR, Angie Sweet of Abilene, KS along with 6 Great grandchildren.

In Lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the St. John Lutheran Church of Kensington or American Legion Fred Marran post #166 of Kensington and can be sent in care of the Summons-Rentschler Mortuary in Smith Center.
