Born in Germany 70 years ago, Mr. Schroder intended to be a farmer, but changed his plans when his sister married the head keeper of the famous Carl Hagenbeck Zoo at Hamburg. He began learning to care for animals in his teens and by the early 1920's had become the foremost trainer of chimpanzees in the world.
He put the first educated chimp on a music bill in London, England, and later toured the world with the animal, Moritz, the First.
After he came to the Detroit Zoo as curator, he trained Jo Mendi, the educated chimpanzee whose daily shows at the zoo entertained huge crowds in the Jo Mendi Theater.
Mr. Schroder was also in charge of animals in the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and John Robinson Circus in the early 1920's and also had a trained Polar Bear act.
His wife, Susie and a daughter, Mrs. Elli Feldmann, of Royal Oak, survive.
