Captain Lutz came to the Jamesburg Church in July, 1940, from Rochester Baptist Seminary. His home town was Carrington, N.C. He had two brothers in the ministry, the Rev. August Lutz and the Rev. Thomas D. Lutz Jr.
While pastor for the First Baptist church in Jamesburg, New Jersey, rev. Lutz enlisted in the U.S. Army in February, 1943 and was commissioned a first lieutenant.
He reported to Harvard University, to attend chaplain's school. He was first assigned to Camp Hann, Cal., and later was transferred to Camp Adair, Ore. While at Camp Adair he was advanced to captain. In January, 1944, Captain Lutz went overseas to England. From there he went to France. He saw active duty with his unit with Patton's Third Army in the Battle of the Bulge at Christmas.
Captain Gustav T. Lutz was killed when the bridge, on which he was crossing the Elbe River, collapsed.
