Charlie Otto, oldest child born to the union of Jesse James Shuttlesworth and Telitha V. Arnold Garrett Shuttlesworth, was a Chief Pipe Fitter in the United States Naval Reserve in World War II when he gave his last full measure of devotion to his nation. His ship was involved in the Liberation of Sicily when he was killed in action.

Charlie Otto left behind his wife, the former Pauline Harriet Taylor, and their two young sons, Charles Ray Shuttlesworth, who was only three days away from marking his 13th birthday, and his youngest, Jack Duane Shuttlesworth, age 7. Young Jack would die by drowning three years after the death of their father.
