Walter served as a Second Lieutenant on B-17 "Bar Fly" #42-40008, 532nd Bomber Squadron, 381st Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Fairfield County, Connecticut prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 12, 1942 in Hartford, Connecticut. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the production of industrial chemicals and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17 #42-40008 took off from Station 168, England on a bombing mission over Germany. After a successful mission, and while returning to their station, they were involved in a mid-air collision with B-17G #42-31490. They crashed north-north-east of Schweinfurt, Germany.

Walter was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
