Mike Stratas Died Here Last Sunday After Long Illness; Moved to America from Greece as Youth: Was in Café Business

Hundreds of friends paid their last tribute to Mitchell "Mike" Stratas Monday afternoon at final rites held at the First Methodist Church. Father Sakelaris of the Birmingham Greek Orthodox Church conducted the services and was assisted by the Reverend Phil Grice. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery with the National Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. He was 47.

Mike, as he was known to hundreds of friends, had known of his fate for many months yet kept up his cheerful disposition until the last hours of his life when he succumbed in a fight which never gave him a chance.

Born on the little Greek Island of Patmos, he moved to America as a youth. He lived in Montgomery and Birmingham before moving to Starkville 18 years ago to associate with Jim Marmaduke in a successful restaurant business.

Mike was a friend to hundreds of college students who ate at his restaurant. With his never ceasing smile and the cheerful accent left from his native tongue, many boys were given their "meal ticket" until money came from home or an allotment check came in – many just because they didn't have the money.

In the last months of his life Mike was a patient at Sanatorium, New Orleans, and New York hospitals. Finally convinced that nothing could be done to help him, he returned here to live the last days of his life cheerfully with family and friends. When possible to get up, he managed to visit the restaurant a few hours each day to chat with friends.

Though Greek Orthodox by religion, he was a regular member of the Methodist Men's Bible Class and actively participated in its activities.

He leaves his wife, Irene Miaoulis; two sons, Nicholas, a high school student, and young Jackie; a brother, Pete Stratas of Montgomery; and his father-in-law Jack Miaoulis, who has made his home here for the past year.

Active pall bearers were: L. M. Prichard, Wilburn Sudduth, Earl Egger, F. S. Cole, Gus Talantis, Tony Dinas, Mike Aster, and Nick Fokakas.

Honorary pall bearers were: Jerome Landers, H. L. McIngvale, Henry Meyer, Nile Burdine, Tom Mosley, Hal Kirby, Frank Cooper, Erie Staggers, Sr., Vaughn green, Kenneth Smith, Lavell Brown, Ike Katz, Henry Reynolds, Gus Hogan, and Frank Meigs.
