Margaret Chalmers Powers (Peggy) passed away July 20, 2010 in Portland, Oregon after a brief illness. Margaret was born August 13, 1919 in Seattle, Washington to Alexander Jessamin Chalmers (1882 Fork Branch Farm, Forest Grove, Oregon - 1961 Portland, OR) and Margaret Panton Chalmers (1892 Duluth, MN- 1977 Portland, OR). Margaret's paternal great-grandparents, William and Catherine Metcalfe Chalmers and her grandparents, Alexander and Isabella Robb Chalmers immigrated to Oregon from "Oldwhat" farm on The Mains of Old What in New Dear, Aberdeenshire, Scotland in 1868/80 to breed and raise Short Horn Cattle and Clydesdale Horses in Washington County, Oregon. They along with their Aberdeenshire neighbors were one of the founding members who established the Tualatin Plains Presbyterian Church (Old Scotch Church) in Hillsboro, Oregon. Margaret's parents took the ferry from Mercer Island to the Swedish Hospital in Seattle for her birth. Her parents subsequently moved to Portland where her father founded The Chalmers Shipping Agency.

Margaret graduated Irvington Elementary School, attended Grant High School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1938 where she was a member of the Pierrette Society. She graduated from Holmes Business School, Portland in 1942. Margaret married 2nd Lt. John James Powers, St. Paul MN Timber Wolf Division 104th Infantry Battle of the Bulge WWII June 1944 in a home ceremony performed by The Very Reverend Kempton (Episcopal). They had three children. They divorced in 1952.

Margaret was the Secretary of the Ainsworth Elementary School PTA and Chair of the Ainsworth Pancake Breakfast. She worked in administration for Meier and Frank and as the parish secretary for St. Stephen's Episcopal Cathedral while continuing legal secretarial training. Margaret moved to Tiburon, CA in 1968. She was a legal secretary in San Francisco for the U. S. Park Service; law firms Graham and James; Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro LLP; Heller, Ehrman, White & McAuliffe retiring from the later in 1988. She was a member of the Marin Rose Society, the Tiburon Community Garden and served as a docent on Angel Island. Margaret returned to Portland in 2002. She was a member of the Portland Art Museum.

Margaret is predeceased by her parents; sister, Nancy Chalmers Myers; former husband John J. Powers (Mill Valley, CA 1983) and brother-in-law, The Honorable Wm. J. Masters (Tigard, OR 2009). She is survived by her sister, Mary Chalmers Masters, Palm Desert, CA; daughters, Alexandra P. Clarke, Christine J. Powers and Margaret R. Powers, all of Portland; grandchildren, Trent A. Stewart, (Nicole) Redmond, OR, Anne C. Clarke, Portland,OR and McKenzie A. Johnson, (Scott) San Francisco, CA; five great grandchildren; nephews, Wm. A. Masters, Esq.(Melinda), Portland and John H. Masters (Linda) Lake Oswego; nieces Priscilla M. Dearman, CA., Barbara M. Terry (Rory) OK and Jeanne Masters, Portland, OR. Margaret was blessed with many devoted, lifelong friends.

Interment will be at The Old Scotch Church Cemetery. A private memorial service will be held at that time.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to the Peter Drucker Center for Cancer Research at OHSU, The Women's Center for Health OHSU, The Oregon Humane Society, the Women's Crisis Line, The Portland Art Museum or a charity of your choice.
