Helmut Hagemann, Seaman, was lost at sea in the service to his country, on May 14, 1943. He was a member of the crew of German U boat U-640 under Commandant Karl-Heinz Nagel. This U-boat was a Type VIIC class, built by Blohm & Voss out of Hamburg, Germany. It was built for Nazi Germany for service during World War II. Commissioned on Sept. 17, 1942, the U-boat took part in only one wolfpack patrols. During this patrol, no enemy ships were sunk. The U-boat was 220 feet in length and carried a crew of four officers and up to 56 enlisted men. Five torpedo tubes were used; 14 torpedoes were carried onboard. The U boat had a range of 8,500 nautical miles. The submarine was fatally hit by a depth charge from the US Catalina of VP-84 on May 14, 1943 and all hands were lost. This occurred in the Atlantic Ocean at 60.32N, 31.05W.
