Lena Britton, 94, Heminford Pioneer Homesteader, Dead
HEMINGFORD (T-HNS) – Mrs. Lena Martz Burri Britton, 94, a resident of the Hemingford vicinity for the past 69 years, died Tuesday evening in St. Joseph’s hospital. Mrs. Britton had lived at the Kuper-Grau Rest Home in Alliance for the past two years and had been hospitalized only 11 days before her death. She was born December 13, 1865 in Kolmar, Germany, and came to the United States when she was 15. She married the late Mr. Burri in 1888. She came to Western Nebraska and homesteaded 9 miles northeast of Hemingford after Mr. Burri died. She built her own sod house and married the late William Britton in 1893. He died in 1906. During the years, she was active in the Methodist Church in Hemingford, a member of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service and the Woman’s Club. She retired from the farm 40 years ago, and had lived in Hemingford until going to the Kuper-Grau rest home. Survivors include her children, Paul Burri of Hemingford, Mrs. Klara Richardson of Rochester, Minn., and Lester Britton of Chicago, Ill; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and many other relatives including Mrs. Kenneth Lee of Alliance, a great niece. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday afternoon at the Hemingford Methodist Church, with the Rev. Otto Quaife officiating. The Bates Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
