Julian Menzel, 91, Lincoln, passed away Sunday (Aug. 29, 2010) at Vonderlieth Living Center, Mount Pulaski. He married Elsie Komnick on Nov. 9, 1947 in Elkhart. She survives.

He was born in Eminence Township on March 25, 1919 to Julius and Caroline Jaggi Menzel. They preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were a brother, Harry W. Menzel, and a sister, Maxine K. Menzel.

Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Harry E. Menzel, Kankakee; David Menzel, Springfield; Michael Menzel, Williamsville and Scott Menzel, Louisville, Ky.; Lee Komnick, Lincoln; Richard Smith and Kathy Frontiero, both of Dunedin, Fl.; David Smith, Clearwater, Fl. and Barbara Smith, Chattanooga, Tennessee; special fried, Lori Reinwald, Colorado Springs, Colorado; seven great-nieces and nephews, Mike, Will, Kelly, Michele, Mandi, Josh and Ryne and five great-great-nieces and nephews, Audrey, Abby, Adam, Karson and Kane.

He was inducted into the Army in 1942 later transferring to the Army Air Force. He served 35 missions as a bomber pilot in World War II in the China Burma India Theater, serving with the Flying Tigers Unit, 11th Bomb Squadron, 14th Air Force. He received the Air Medal.
