Joseph Helmkamp was born in Germany in 1839 and immigrated to the US with the family in 1841. They settled in Reading Ohio. He married Magdelena Sauer in 1861. Joseph served in the civil war from 1962 to 1865 then returned to Ohio where he farmed. Their son Henry was born in 1866. In 1969 he moved his family to Rome Georgia and farmed there until 1875. Another son William and daughter Ada were born there. In 1875 he moved his family to Lincoln NE via covered wagon. He worked in the hardware business and built a frame home in Lincoln. In 1886 he moved to Loup county Nebraska where he homesteaded near Taylor NE. His son Henry also homesteaded in the same area. In 1906 he and Magdelena moved to Milford NE for health reasons. He died in 1908 and was buried in Wyuka cemetery in Lincoln
