He was born Aug. 31, 1922, in Alamota, to Jacob and Charlotte Voos Hemel.
On May 17, 1942, he married E. Jean Rowe in Scott City. She died Jan. 26, 2006. He also was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Jacob, Delmar, Donald, Reuben and Clifford; and a sister, Nedra Hemel.
Mr. Hemel worked as the janitor and activity bus driver for the Dighton schools for more than 30 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include two sons, Rikki Hemel of Van Alstyne, Texas, and Nikki Hemel of Dighton; two daughters, Alana Chapman and Alicia Pike, both of Dighton; six sisters, Melva Knight, Bettie Murphy and Alice Quint, all of Scott City, Ila Boone of Dighton, Shirley Ummel of Harper, and Linda Barlow of Anthony; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Military graveside services were at Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
