Amanda (Wickhorst) Engelbrecht 1864-1920

DEATH WINS LONG BATTLE. Death Takes Prominent Remsen Woman. Resident of Meadow Township for Two Decades.

Mrs. Gerhardt Engelbrecht, a well known resident of Meadow township for the past twenty years, passed away at her home Monday evening after a prolonged illness. Her death was due to tuberculosis. Mrs. Engelbrecht was 56 years of age. She is survived by her husband, four daughters, six sons and three brothers. The funeral was held in Remsen this afternoon.

Mrs. Engelbrecht began to fail in health in April of this year, and in June she went to Rochester, Minn., for advice and treatments, which however failed to benefit her condition. Her health gradually grew worse, and she was confined to the sickroom for the past four months. She passed away at 7:30 o'clock Monday morning.

The deceased was born on March 28, 1864, in Eddebach, Holstein, Germany. Her maiden name was Amanda Wickhorst. She came to the United States alone in 1881. She settled at Alton, and in the same year was united in marriage to Gerhardt Engelbrecht who was then engaged in farming in Sioux county. After their marriage the couple continued to make their home on a Sioux county farm in Meadow township, Plymouth county, where they have resided ever since.

Besides the sorrowing husband the deceased is survived by the following children: John, of Alcester, S.D.; Annie, now Mrs. George Krantz, of Canistota, S.D.; Charles, farming near Remsen; Herman, Emil, Alfred, Alma and Vera, all at home. Two stepchildren survive her, namely, William and Katie, the latter now Mrs. Henry Raun; both living on farms north of Remsen. Besides the children and husband there are three brothers: John T. living in Germany; Peter, of Alcester, S.D., and Henry, of Lorraine, Wis.

Mrs. Engelbrecht was a lifelong member of the Evangelical Lutheran church, and one of its staunchest supporters. She took an active part in all affairs touching the welfare of the church, and was widely acquainted for her interest in the life of the community in which she lived so long. Possessing many qualities that endeared her to all with whom she came in contact in daily social life, she won hosts of friends who feel keenly the loss of a loving friend and who sympathize with the bereaved family.

The funeral was held this afternoon, with services in St. Paul's Lutheran church. Burial was in the Remsen cemetery.
