He was born July 22, 1908 in Stepnoia, Russia, the son of Peter and Anna Margaret Frank Schmahl.
He came to Chilton in 1920 and was employed at Carnation for 15 years. On October 12, 1935 he married the former Verona Schatz at St. Martin Lutheran Church. He owned and operated the Central Hotel from 1947 to 1974 and was a school bus driver for 27 years.
He was a member of the Horseless Carriage Club of America and past board of director of the local region.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Pat) Bailey, R. 4, Chilton, Mrs. Fred (Diane) Schwartz, Abelene, Texas; one son, John A. Schmahl, New Holstein; four sisters, Mrs. Lloyd (Kay) Baumann, Elgin, Illinois, Mrs. Richard (Ann) Kemerling, Elgin, Illinois, Mrs. Earl (Emma) Helmke, Grinnell, Michigan, Mrs. Robert (Louise) Kleinschmidt, Saginaw, Michigan; three brothers, George of Cocoa, Florida, Henry and Richard of Chilton, seven grandchildren.
Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services were at Wieting Funeral Home with the Rev. Moeschberger officiating. Burial was in the Union Cemetery.
