The funeral was on Monday at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz. Presiding at the Mass of Christian Burial was the Rev. David Beaudry and the Rev. Gerald Sirois. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Harlan was born on Sept. 11, 1932, in Manitowoc County, son of the late Anton and Mary Backhaus Meyer. He attended St. Gregory Elementary School, and graduated from Kiel High School in 1950.
Harlan then served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1954, as an interpreter in Germany.
On May 5, 1956, he married the former Germaine Fischer at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alverno.
Harlan served as vice president of the St. Nazianz State Bank, retiring in 1990 as branch manager of First National Bank in St. Nazianz.
He was a member of the St. Nazianz Lions Club, a 25-year member of the St. Nazianz Fire Department, a member of the St. Gregory
finance committee and also a St. Nazianz village trustee for many years.
Harlan was very instrumental in establishing the St. Nazianz Housing Authority. He was a charter member of the Viking Bow & Gun Club and enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, card playing and traveling.
The Christianson-Deja Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
