Howard Carl Koeppen, 73, of Henning, died Wednesday,
July 2, 2003, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.
He was born Nov. 5, 1929, in Wheeling, I11., the son of William and Minnie (Rateike) Koeppen, Sr. He was raised on a farm in Wheeling and attended school there. He enlisted in the U.S. Army when he was 17 years old and was stationed in Georgia. He was married on Aug. 5, 1950 in Evanston, I11., to Ann Meyer. In 1951, he entered the U.S. Navy. When he left the Navy, he became a police officer, working as a sergeant in Illinois. He retired from police work in 1958. In 1968, after moving to Minnesota, they purchased the Minneha Resort on West Battle Lake. He worked for Otter Tail county from 1968 until 1991 as custodian at the courthouse.
He enjoyed his flowers and gardens and also spending time
with his grandchildren, of whom he was so proud. He loved auctions, visiting people and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife, Anne; a daughter, Kathleen {Darrell Pederson) Johnson of Underwood; a son, James H. Koeppen of Ottertail; grandchildren, TSgt Todd (Melissa) Johnson,TSgt Scott (Amy) Johnson, Kari Johnson, Henry Koeppen and Brian Koeppen; great-grandchildren, Blaine, Morgan, Taylor, and Brandon Johnson; and brothers, Bernhardt (Esther) Koeppen of Wheeling, 111., and William (Alice) Koeppen, Jr. of Tucson, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Bernice, Violet, and Elaine; and a brother, Andrew.
Visitation: Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church
Service: 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Henning
