23 April 1909: Struck On Head, Dies of Injury - More or less mystery surrounds the death at East Lebanon this morning, of Joseph Havaruck, a foreigner. The patient was under treatment for a long time at the Good Samaritan hospital and only several days ago was discharged as practically cured. He had suffered from a severe wound on the head, and trephining was resorted to, to save his life. Since he died it has been learned that the original wound was inflicted several months ago by a fellow countryman, who has since departed for parts unknown. Whether it was in a fight or otherwise that the wound was inflicted, it is not yet definitely known, but neighbors of the family say the man was hit with the butt end of a revolver, and the flight of the man who wielded the weapon suggests foul play of some kind. The case was reported to County Coroner F S Kaufman, who detailed his deputy, J Herbert Manbeck, to make a thorough investigation of the case. An autopsy will be made of the remains, and an inquest will probably be held if the results of the post mortem examination warrant such action. Haveruck is survived by a wife and two children, Stephen and Joseph. The parents of the deceased reside in Austro Hungary. The deceased was aged 27 years. He resided at Fifth avenue and was employed at the American Iron and Steel Works. [Lebanon Daily News]

6 May 1909: County Detective Aaron Sattazahn on Tuesday returned from East Youngstown, Ohio, with Jacob Feljan, accused of having, six months ago, struck a blow which terminated in the death of Joseph Havarnek, a fellow Austrian, of East Lebanon. The accused consented to come here without extradition, and will stand trial probably on a charge of manslaughter. Alderman R L Miller has fixed next Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock for a hearing in the case in which Feljan is charged with aggravated assault and battery with intent to kill. At that time the charge may be changed to murder or manslaughter. [Lebanon Semi-Weekly News]

NOTE: Feljan pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to two years in prison for the fight/injury that occurred on October 25, 1908.
