Lowell E. Wians, 68, Gillett, died Thursday afternoon, July 22, 2004, at home with his family by his side following a 6 1/2-year illness with colon cancer. He was born Feb. 26, 1936, in Gillett, to the Rev. Erich and Frieda (Westphal) Wians.

As a young boy, Lowell attended Apple Orchard Grade School near Gillett. At the age of 12 years, he moved with his family to Algoma where he graduated from high school. It was during this part of his life that Lowell enjoyed playing cornet and piano in a polka band with friends.

As a young man, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a chaplain's assistant. He continued as an organist during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge from the military, he moved back to Gillett and worked for Ansorge Distributing.

On Sept. 17, 1959, he married Caroline Zarling at St. John's Lutheran Church in Gillett. The couple lived in Gillett for a short time before moving to Ashwaubenon where Lowell was employed by SuperValu Stores. In 1974, the family moved back to Gillett and Lowell continued his 37-year career with SuperValu until retiring in 2001.

Over the years, Lowell enjoyed music and served as a church organist in many congregations including St. John's Lutheran, Rankin; St. John's Lutheran, Gillett; Redeemer and Pilgrim Lutheran churches, Green Bay; Peace Lutheran, Oneida; and most recently as a member of St. John's Riverside Lutheran Church in the town of Oconto Falls.

He was a member of the Gillett American Legion Post. Lowell possessed a real zest for life and loved doing things with his family and for his church.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 44 years, Caroline Wians; their two sons, Todd (Mona) and Craig Wians, all of Gillett; two grandchildren whom Lowell dearly loved, Andrea and Colton Wians; three brothers, Eric (Joyce) Wians, Algoma, Melvin (Janice) Wians, Kaukauna, and Duane (Sigrid) Wians, Green Bay; one sister, Gloria (Edward) Qualman, Algoma; one sister-in-law, Alice (Gene) Krautkramer, Kaukauna; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Wilbert and Edward Wians.

Friends called at the Wians family home parish, the former Immanuel Lutheran Church, now Faith United, three miles northwest of Gillett on Cty. Hwy. H after 1 p.m. Sunday, July 25, until the time of services. Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Sunday at the church with the Revs. John Laatsch and Bill Kamke officiating. Burial, with military honors, was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, town of Gillett.
