Thomas Lorenzen, who was active in the business life of Traer nearly 35 years, and spent most of his life here, died at 4:20 last Friday morning in Schoitz Memorial hospital. He was the victim of a cerebral hemorrhage at nearly 77 years of age and had been in the hospital only since Tuesday afternoon of last week. He had not been well for several years but was not bedfast until his last illness.
Tom, a son of Henry and Christine Lorenzen, was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, March 11, 1875, and came with his parents to the United States when he was 16. The family settled on a farm five miles southeast of Traer. Tom became a naturalized United States citizen in 1897, and a good and useful citizen he proved to be. In 1908 Tom came to Traer from the farm to become a partner of Fred Cherveny in the hardware and farm implement business. In 1915 they bought the double brick store building now occupied by the Ray Holst farm implement business. The partnership continued until 1920, when they sold the hardware business to Savoy & Beckman. Mr. Lorenzen continued the implement business, as agent for the John Deere line, while Mr. Cherveny carried on with the McCormick-Deering franchise. As partners they had handled both lines, but the manufacturers were insisting on individual dealerships.
Mr. Lorenzen was out of business a few years on account of his health, but went back in when his condition improved, and was active on Traer's business street until a few years ago. He was popular with the farmers. In 1941 Tom sold an interest in his business to his son-in-law, Ray Holst, and in 1943 he sold all of his interest to Ray, who continues as Traer's John Deere dealer.
Tom married Emma Schade 1904, who died a few years later. Two sons born to the couple died in infancy. On November 1, 1919, he married Ivah Pederson at Davenport. Surviving with the widow are three daughters — Mrs. Ruth Schrader, of Chicago Mrs. Edna Holst, Traer, and Mrs. Bette Speirs, of Gladbrook; and seven grandchildren. He also leaves a brother John of Toledo. A sister Mrs. Frank Bauer, of Traer, and two brothers, Peter and Henry, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the States Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Paul Somerville, Methodist pastor. Mrs. Norman Draper and Mrs. Gerald Ewing sang, accompanied at the piano by Nancy States. Casket bearers were Dr. F. E. Brutsman, I. R. Branson, George Roepke, Vernon Beaver, Logan Wilson and Albert Gravatt. Mrs. C. E. Naylor, Mrs. Ed Bohnstengel and Mrs. Adele Hoeppner were in charge of flowers. Burial was in Buckingham cemetery.
Relatives here for the services included the daughter, Mrs. Schrader, and son, Darryl, of Chicago; the grandson, Duane Holst, who is attending a school in Milwaukee; the brother, John, of Toledo, and numerous nieces and nephews, and other relatives including Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lorenzen, of Pipestone Minn.; Mrs. Viola Kiendt, of Hardwick, Minnesota; Mrs. Edna Strassburg, of Kenneth, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Hans Lorenzen, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Fritz, of Denver, Iowa; Roscoe Kerr and son, Richard, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lorenzen, and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Brandt, Toledo; Mr. and Mrs. Gus Schade, Garwin; and others from Dysart, LaPorte City, Gladbrook, Belle Plaine and Marshalltown. Some of the relatives from nearby towns were unable to come on account of the snow storm and bad roads
