Daniel was the oldest child of Daniel Sr. and Luise Regine "Louisa" (Raeuchle) Brumm (1829-1916). He was born in Wurttemberg, immigrated to the United States, arriving soon after he reached age 5, and, along with his family, settled in St. Louis, Missouri, where he married Sophia Blaicher (1857-1936) on September 26, 1874. Daniel was the father to seven children: Louisa (1875-1881), Emma (Brumm) Busekrus (1877-1945), William (1880-1975), Edward (1883-1964), Charles Fred (1886-1888), August "Gus" (1889-1954), and a child who died in infancy.
