Abry S. Cahn Succumbs to Heart Attack – Civic, Religious Leader's Services Scheduled Sunday

Abry S. Cahn Sr., 75-year-old prominent Shreveport business, civic and religious leader, died at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Doctor's Hospital.

Mr. Cahn, a member of a pioneer Shreveport family, suffered a heart attack last week. He resided at 241 Gladstone Blvd.

Mr. Cahn was chairman of the board of Cahn Electric Co., Inc., president of Cahn Electric Co. of Monroe and president of Mechanical Contractors, Inc.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday at the B'Nai Zion Temple by Rabbi David Lefkowitz Jr. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of the Osborn Funeral Home.

Mr. Cahn founded Cahn Electric Co. in the basement of the family home at McNeil and Crockett streets in 1907 when the city's population was 28,015.

His name linked to the success of his business with his familiar motto: "When others can't—Abry Cahn."

The business has operated from its present location, the Cahn Building, at 708 Milam St. since 1921.

In 1911, Mr. Cahn was joined in the business by his brother, Henry E. Cahn, who is president of the company. For the past several years his son, Abry S. Cahn Jr., has served as vice president of the firm.

Throughout the years Mr. Cahn has devoted a large portion of his energies to religious, civic and charitable affairs.

Mr. Cahn was a lifelong member of B'Nai Zion Congregation. He served as president of the congregation in 1931 and 1932. He also served on the building committee which was instrumental in building the facilities which the congregation now occupies on Southfield Road.

He recently was asked to serve as a trustee for the newly formed B'Nai Zion Foundation. He is a past president of the Jewish Federation.

Mr. Cahn had been active for several years in the activities of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He served as chairman of the NCCJ Brotherhood Week here in 1951. In 1960 he was honored, along with five other prominent Shreveporters, for his long and devoted service to the conference.

In 1933 Mr. Cahn was one of the signers of the articles of incorporation of Community Fund of Shreveport and Caddo Parish. This was the forerunner of today's Community Chest.

Mr. Cahn has served as chairman of the Charity Medical Unit, state chairman of the Joint Defense Appeal, chairman of the Shreveport-Bossier Safety Council and chairman of the 1950 Cancer Drive.

He was a member of the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, 40 and 8, a noble in El Karubah Shrine, a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Shreveport Lodge.

Active in Downtown Shreveport Lions Club, he earned a life membership last year. He was a captain in the Caddo Parish sheriff's auxiliary.

He also was a member of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers.

A registered electrical engineer, in 1931 he served on the panel of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors.

Mr. Cahn was born July 12, 1888. His parents were the late Carroll and Regina Sour Cahn, both of whom were natives and lifelong residents of the city.

Mr. Cahn graduated from local public schools, attended Louisiana Tech and graduated from New York Electrical School. A veteran of World War I, he married the former Janice Pfeifer of Little Rock, Ark., on Sep. 7, 1921.

Survivors are the widow, his son, a daughter, Mrs. Cerf Hirsch of Shreveport, his brother and three grandchildren.
