From the Omaha World Herald Newspaper:
Gentle strength and strong compassion have been called the hallmarks of Sister Phyllis Ann Hayek's 57 years of service to God and the community.

Hayek, who joined the Notre Dame Sisters in 1952, relied on those qualities while working as an educator and as the manager of an Omaha retirement home.

Sister Celeste Wobeter, president of the Notre Dame Sisters, said Hayek embraced each and every opportunity to help others.

"I like to describe her as a valiant woman who in her gentle strength and strong compassion for people helped them know their dignity and value," Wobeter said Sunday. "Her special care for the immigrant, the poor and the struggling came from her strong sense of justice."

Hayek, 80, died Thursday at Immanuel Medical Center after several years of declining health. A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church.

Hayek was born to Frank and Anna (Pokorny) Hayek of Toledo, Iowa, on April 23, 1930. After completing grade school in Toledo, Hayek entered the Notre Dame Academy and eventually the Notre Dame congregation.

She received her bachelor's degree from the former Duchesne College in Omaha and her master's degree in education from Creighton University.

From 1952 until her retirement in 2009, Hayek was involved in the ministry of the Notre Dame Sisters. For 31 years, she taught in the elementary grades and served as a principal in Iowa and Nebraska schools.

Hayek served six years as treasurer of the Notre Dame Sisters and six years as the order's provincial president. She later worked for 10 years as the manager of Seven Oaks of Florence, an independent living facility for the elderly.

Even in her retirement, Hayek continued caring for the elderly, especially those in hospice care.

Hayek's sister, Sister Michelle Hayek of Wahoo, Neb., said the unassuming nun was "solid as a rock" and unflappable.

"She had strong and consistent values that continued to show themselves in whatever ministry she performed: teaching, administration or managing of the Seven Oaks complex," Michelle Hayek said.

"Her compassion and love for others was outstanding."

Sr. Phyllis Ann Hayek, 80, a Notre Dame sister of 57 years, died December 9 at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha.

Services were held Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. at St. Philip Neri Church in Omaha with burial in the Calvary Cemetery in Omaha.

Hayek was a former teacher at St. Michael’s school in Harlan. She is survived by her Notre Dame sisters; sister Sr. Michelle Hayek ND of Wahoo, Neb.; brothers George (Dorothy) Hayek of Elberon; Msgr. Stanley Hayek of Charles City and Bernard (Roseann) Hayek of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law Bonnie Hayek of Clutier; nieces and nephews.
