Hazel Helms Bryant, 93, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Friday, December 10, 2010. Hazel was predeceased by her husband, Elmer L. Bryant; daughter, Betty J. Bryant; and eight siblings. Hazel's father, Elder John P. Helms, and grandfather, Elder Peter Corn, were well known Primitive Baptist preachers. The family lineage dates back as far as Jesse Corn Sr. who fought in the militia at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse and served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1797. Hazel loved cooking, gardening, craftwork, hiking and bird watching. She was a professional hair stylist. She retired after owning and operating Bryant's Beauty Box. Hazel was a Girl Scout leader and she served as State Treasurer for the Virginia Hairdressing Association. Hazel truly cherished her family and friends. She dearly loved her family and enjoyed the time together whether it was sitting on the porch or the many reunions, birthdays and holidays -especially the Christmas holidays. She is survived by daughter, Loretta & husband, Lynn McClure, of Missouri; daughter, Marie & husband, Ron Osterbuhr, of Kansas; son, David Bryant, of Washington, DC; sister, Pearl Pendleton, of Roanoke; grandchildren, Karl Osterbuhr and Rachael Ruff, of Colorado, Kurt Osterbuhr and Rene Spillman, of Kansas, Lt. Col. Greg & Dawn McClure, of Washington, DC, Laura McClure, of Maryland, and Kas & Jamie Osterbuhr, of Colorado; and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2010, at Oakey's South Chapel with Elder Conner officiating. Interment to follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 17, 2010, at Oakey's South Chapel.
